Congruence: How to know what to do, when you don't know what to doPaul Wedgwood This is part two to the talk Paul Wedgwood gave at DICE Europe 2013. Paul committed Splash Damage to staff happiness. He had answered what he believed were the three most important questions; Why does Splash Damage exist? How should Splash Damage behave? What does Splash Damage do? Paul quickly realised that saying he would transform Splash Damage in to a happy company, was not the same as doing it. He discovered that how the company appeared to fans, and how its leadership appeared to employees, was not at all consistent with how it seemed to act behind closed doors. He had created an intangible idealistic manifesto, Now he needed to achieve actual results... |

A New Dawn for Simulated Worlds: the Making of Worlds AdriftHenrique Olifiers Henrique's presentation will highlight the game design paradigm transformation that's about to take place, with a generation of Minecraft players whose limitless creativity is restricted by being unable to migrate or graduate into any massive online game in the market due to their scripted, 'on-rails' approach. He will shine a light on how the technology behind Worlds Adrift is a means to an end: creating interactive, reactive and gigantic persistent worlds where empowered players are set loose to do things that were otherwise impossible until now. Henrique will also share the challenges presented by the technology and game design, how to deal with users being able to definitively alter the world around them, methods for populating a gigantic universe, how advanced AI is now possible to be employed in a massive environment, and how the freedom of action by players results in endless content being created on the fly as they play, changing the way we think about content production and game updates. |
